Small animal rescue calendars
Hello folks! I hope this is ok to post here. My name's Rachel, I volunteer at Paws Here which is an animal rescue in Scotland that works with "small furries" like rabbits, guinea pigs etc. Most of our work is with rabbits, as they're the third most popular pet in the country and, sadly, the most neglected.

Winter is always such an awful time of year for us, as we get lots of bunnies brought in to be rehomed because people keep them outside and then can't be bothered to go and look after them in the cold weather :( We also have people who don't want to arrange holiday care abandoning their bunnies, and then after Christmas we get the unwanted Christmas present bunnies. All in all, it's very difficult and stressful.

To try to help our fundraising so that we can help as many pets as possible this year, we've had several photographers come to the shelter over the past few months to take some pictures of the rescue pets and we've made a 2011 wall calendar with these beautiful pictures. The calendar is lovely and would make a great present.

If anyone would like to support us you can order the calendars on our website here http://pawshereedinburgh.co.uk/page_76

Thank you! (cross-posted, so sorry if you're seeing this twice!)

Here is a bonus picture of one of our bunnies!Collapse )

Black Velvet Fanlisting

I recently made a fanlisting for one of my favourite colouration of chinchilla, Black Velvet. If you are also a fan of these beauties, please do consider joining and showing your love!

Inquisitive - The Black Velvet Chinchillas Fanlisting

"What is a fanlisting?" some of you might ask? A detailed desciption can be found here: http://thefanlistings.org/tfl101.php But mainly, it's just for fun and to create a small dedication to something you like!

New members would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

I just joined this community, and I have a few questions about skunks.

Has anyone here ever had one? I've heard they make good pets if you have them from when they're babies and you get them descented. I'm not really sure about it, as I've never had one. I know wild animals don't make good pets for the most part, but I figured this would be the place that would know. They certainly are adorable either way. The only pet I have right now is a very very, VERY old cat, and she's on the small side, although i don't think that counts as a smallfurry. Wish I had more to share, but, if anyone has any experiences with skunks as pets, I would love to hear your thoughts on them.

New to Small Animals
Hello everyone!

I'm moving into a new apartment, and I've missed having animals around since I left for college 4 years ago. So, time to adopt, I think. I've had experience with dogs and a parrot, but my apartment doesn't allow dogs or cats. Small animals are fine.

So, for someone new to small animal ownership, is a sugar glider going to be too much for me? I've been considering rats; they seem incredibly sweet.

I like animals who have a sense of humor, with big personalities. With those generalizations in mind, any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

(ps, I'm interested in rescues in Chicago, so I'd appreciate recommendations on those as well)

the feds wanna' take your pets [x-posted]
On April 23rd 2009, The Natural Resources Committee of the U.S. Congress will hold a hearing on H.R. 669, a resolution that will in effect ban importation, interstate transport, and the private ownership of most birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish as pets. Should HR669 be adopted as written only the following nonnative animals
would be allowed:

-Cats (Felis catus)
-Cattle/Oxen (Bos taurus)
-Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus)
-Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris)
-Donkey/Asses (Equus asinus)
-Domesticated Geese (family Anatidae)
-Domesticated Ducks (Anas spp.)
-Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus)
-Common Goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus)
-Horses (Equus caballus)
-Llama (Lama glama)
-Mule/Hinny (Equus caballus x E. asinus)
-Domesticated Pigs/Hogs (Sus scrofa domestica)
-Domesticated Rabbit vatieties (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
-Sheep (Ovis aries)

Should this resolution be adopted into law as written it will have a devastating impact on every pet owner and business in the United States.

Action is needed TODAY to protect your rights to keep your pets! (So call/email/write your local congressrep voicing your opposition)

EDIT: I made quite the... Equus asinus of myself, believing what was circulating before studying the bill. That list is only the definition of domestic species. No list has been agreed upon yet. LINK FOR ACTUAL BILL

Kissing Squirrelly.....

Yeah, I am a little strange, but my squirrel is like my baby. This is one of our favourite activities. I think she make like this more than all of the nuts in the world. If it goes on long enough, she starts to clean me. I think that she thinks I am grooming her when I do this. Squirrels love to clean themselves and sometimes each other.

My new small furry
Hi. My name is michelle. I own my own zoo of animals but recently decided to adopt this cute little gerbil. I went into a local pet store just to look around and they had this gerbil in a tank with cedar bedding (AHH!) no food, no water or anything. I was like wtf? since all the other animals were being well taken care of and I often do business with these people. The owners cousin was taking care of the shop for the last month while the owner was out of town. He said that this gerbil had two black parents, and she came out albino. The siblings/parents attacked her and chewed off the end of her tail and scratched her belly up pretty bad. I started playing with her and she was so friendly and just wanted some scritches. He said that the owner had the gerbil at home for the first 3 months of her life letting her heal and become accustom to people. I had seen this gerbil seperated from the others a few times that I had been in there, but never with no food/water or improper bedding. The cousin said that she wouldn't sell because of her being albino with a short tail from the injury. So someone was comming to take her as a feeder gerbil for a snake.
I could not deal with that, she was so friendly and its not fair that because she isnt perfect no one wants her so she becomes food. I asked how much he wanted for her and he said $4. He said that if I took her he would sell me a small cage for about $5. I now have a larger cage for her that I got for $20 that she loves much more.
I have never had a gerbil before but I love her already. Her name is Albie (albino) my boyfriend and I thought she looked like an Albie. She loves to run around on my bed and lay in my lap.

This is what she looked like the first day we got her, all ruffled and sick...but still so friendly.

This is her today. Smooth, chubby and still soo sweet with her little tail! lol Its so cute.

This is a cruddy camera phone picture of her current cage. I know it is on the small side but she gets free range time every day and also has a outside ball/wheel that she plays on in my room on the floor when I am studying.

This is the site I have been using mainly as a resource, is there anything that I need to know specifically that may not be on a how to care for gerbil site? http://www.twinsqueaks.com/guide.html

Lets Talk About Squirrels As Pets......

My pumpkin.... My pumpkin....

So easy. Such an easy going little girl. She does the cutest things 100% of the time. A lot of things she does involves both of my hands, so I am unable to photograph it. There is a series of these photos that almost seem perverse;) If you click on the image, it will take you to my gallery.

Keep watching me for more cute photos. It is one of my favourite things to do with Squirrelly, and she seems to like being photographed, as well!

Having Squirrelly really has been a pleasure. I make decisions and plans based on what makes her happy, which involves me staying home. I have had her for 2 months as of Saturday. I can't say enough good things about her.

RESPONSIBILITY - I have been told by many people that this animal does not make a good pet, and I would agree that for most people it wouldn't. She is nothing like any other animal that I have ever had. She requires far more attention than my cat, who is a spoiled princess herself. You cannot just leave this animal in a cage. She spends 66% of her day outside of her cage. The only time she is in her cage is to sleep. This requires that I watch her all the time so that she does not chew on my furniture, eat things she isn't suppose to and doesn't get in a fight with the cat.

This animal can live, from what I have read about others' experiences, 6-20 years! This is an awfully long time, no? If I think about it that way, it means that I could have my Squirrelly until I am 47 years old - WOW!

This has been an enormous responsibility......Collapse )

Dwarf hamsters in San Francisco!
Can anyone in the San Francisco, CA area take on some dwarf hamsters? I found this ad for free hamsters - to quote:

"One of my male dwarf hamsters got into the cage with all of the other females and got them all pregnant. Thus the horde of Dwarf Hamsters have arrived. I am giving them away for free because they are much more bothersome than I can afford and if I could I would pay someone to take them away... I know what people may want little rodents for so for food or for pets, please take them."

I contacted the poster and she said she has approximately 25 at the moment, ranging from 2 weeks old (those she would give away with the mother) to 4 months and beyond. I really don't want to see them end up as snake food, so please pass this on. (Also, if you're somewhere on the way between San Francisco and Los Angeles and think you could give a good home to one or more, please comment about that too, just in case I'm able to make it up there this weekend.)

Thank you!

We're the cutest little boys, and we need a home! We live in Ypsilanti, MI but our rescuer will drive us up to 3+ hours to get us in good homes. We are about 3 months old, healthy and sweet, and we are both neutered. Everyone else from our litters have gone home, but we're still unwanted! Won't anyone adopt us?

Ratties for adoption
These two pretty girls are up for adoption in Ypsilanti, MI. I took them in when their time was up at the shelter. They are very nice girlies, and I'd really like them to find a good home. I'm willing to travel to place them.
